Chuck Jones moves on
For many professional dancers, the end of their careers arrives sooner than they would like. The body changes, the physical demands increase, and eventually the moment comes when a new direction presents itself.

For Chuck Jones (37), however, that moment does not feel like a loss. After fifteen years of professional dancing, he looks to the future with confidence and curiosity. When reflecting on his career, he describes his departure as three things at once: a farewell, a transition, and a new beginning. Of course, he will miss dancing. The stage, the performances, and the unique energy of live performance have occupied a central place in his life for many years. Yet sadness is not the dominant emotion.
On the contrary, he is mainly excited about what lies ahead. The idea of life after dance is not new to him. From an early age, he realized that a professional dance career would not last forever. He had even set himself a clear deadline: by the age of thirty-seven, he wanted to be doing something different. The idea that he would one day pursue a new path had always been part of his vision for the future.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 gave him the time to turn those plans into reality. When performances and tours came to a standstill, he finally had the opportunity to think seriously about the next stage of his life. During that period, he obtained a certification as a Pilates instructor and began exploring the field of physical therapy. Conversations with physiotherapists who worked with dancers further sparked his interest.
He discovered that the profession perfectly combined his passion for movement, health, and helping others. After extensive research, he chose to study physical therapy at SOMT University in Amersfoort. There he will begin a bachelor’s degree, which he plans to follow with a master’s program.
It is a multi-year commitment that requires a significant investment of time and energy. Yet Chuck does not see it as a burden. To him, it feels like an opportunity to learn again and continue developing himself. His interest in physical therapy goes beyond practical considerations. He wants to help people move better and prevent injuries. Working with athletes and dancers, in particular, appeals to him.
As a former dancer, he understands better than most the physical and mental pressures that come with performing at a high level. He knows what it means to push the body to its limits every day and how vulnerable it can become after years of intense use. According to Chuck, dancers are often viewed solely as artists, while they are also elite athletes. Advances in dance science and sports medicine are creating more opportunities to prevent injuries rather than simply treating them afterward. It is this preventive approach that fascinates him.
He hopes to contribute to healthier training methods and movement practices within the dance world in the future. His retraining is supported by Omscholingsregeling Dansers Nederland (ODN), a Dutch transition fund that helps professional dancers prepare for new careers. Thanks to this support, a large part of his educational expenses is covered, allowing him to focus fully on his studies and future ambitions.
That does not mean the coming years will be easy. His days will be filled with classes, commuting, studying, and teaching Pilates. Still, hard work does not intimidate him. It is something he learned from an early age. Chuck grew up in a family where ambition, discipline, and perseverance were highly valued. His siblings have built successful international careers, and his parents always encouraged their children to strive for excellence. At the same time, they taught them to remain humble. Achievement mattered, but character mattered even more.
That upbringing has strongly shaped his view of success. For Chuck, success is not about being better than others; it is about becoming the best version of yourself. He believes in pursuing ambitious goals, provided that you are willing to work hard to achieve them. What stands out most is how relaxed he is about leaving dance behind. While some performers struggle to let go of the stage, he sees his departure as a natural process. In fact, he views it as an opportunity for younger dancers to step forward and take their place.
In his opinion, renewal is essential for any company, and every generation deserves the chance to grow and develop. To explain his feelings, he uses a vivid metaphor. He compares the body to a canvas. As a dancer grows older, artistic insight and technical mastery continue to increase. At the same time, the body—the canvas itself—gradually begins to wear down. Eventually, those two lines intersect. Chuck feels he has reached that point.
That is why his decision feels both logical and healthy. Although he is retiring as a professional dancer, movement will always remain an important part of his life. Pilates, sports, and an active lifestyle will continue to be part of his daily routine. He may occasionally take a dance class, but for now he is looking forward to his studies and the challenges that come with them.
When he reflects on his years in dance, he sees above all what the profession has given him: discipline, perseverance, focus, and the ability to deal with setbacks. Those qualities will accompany him into the next chapter of his life. For Chuck Jones, the end of his dance career does not feel like a final curtain call. Instead, it feels like the opening of a new story. The world of dance has shaped him, but the future offers new opportunities to grow, learn, and help others. And that is precisely what makes this transition so meaningful to him.
