Maker Pathway
As a house of creation, we support choreographers and artists at different stages of their careers. We offer space for research, training, creation, and new ideas. We do this in a warm and open environment, where makers can explore their own artistic voice. Our Maker Pathway supports emerging, mid-career, and established makers. It helps them grow their practice and contribute to the future of dance. It also strengthens our connection with the local dance community.

A maker can take part in the NDT Maker Pathway through three areas:
Below, you can read more about each area and the opportunities they offer and how to introduce yourself as a maker.
Research and development
-
Internships
Internships are for makers at the start of their choreographic journey. During an internship, a maker follows an experienced choreographer during the creation process. They can see how an idea is developed into a work. They also learn how different theatre elements, such as costumes, music and lighting, become part of the work. They also see how a choreographer works with dancers and the creative team of NDT.
-
Micro Residencies
Our Micro Residencies give makers time and space to explore new ideas. These residencies are flexible. They are shaped around where the maker is in their career and what they want to develop. A Micro Residency can support a maker in different ways. For example, it can help them develop specific skills, do research or create new work.
The Micro Residencies are for emerging, mid-career, and established makers. There are NDT Micro Residencies and Korzo/NDT Micro Residencies.

Artistic Assistants
Experienced artists can offer important support to emerging makers. Our Artistic Assistants support makers during the creation process for Up & Coming Choreographers and Switch. They can offer coaching, feedback, artistic advice and dramaturgical support. This creates space for makers to learn from each other and grow together.

Up & Coming Lab
In our Up & Coming Lab, four emerging makers work with the dancers of NDT 2 for two weeks. During this time, they explore ideas and develop a short work. At the end of the lab, they share the result in an informal presentation in the NDT Black Box.

Up & Coming Choreographers
More infoUp & Coming Choreographers is a close collaboration between NDT and Korzo. The project gives talented emerging makers the chance to create a work with the dancers of NDT 2. It supports new voices, experiment, and exchange. Up & Coming Choreographers ends with performances in the intimate setting of Korzo theatre in The Hague.
For the 2025–2026 season, we have selected Rachelle Scott and Tom Weinberger as our Up & Coming Choreographers. These new voices offer a view of current ideas in contemporary dance. We are happy to support their artistic development.
-
Here We Live and Now
The Hague is known as a city of dance. It is full of choreographic talent and offers many chances to discover new makers. Every year, Korzo and NDT select emerging makers from The Hague and give them space to create new work for Korzo theatre. Here We Live and Now offers a programme full of new ideas and inspiration. It is a way to discover what is next in contemporary dance.
-
Switch
More infoSwitch is one of our annual favourites. It is an evening created, produced, and choreographed entirely by the dancers of NDT. Switch gives our dancers the chance to challenge themselves, develop new skills as makers, and connect with the audience in a more personal way. Alongside the work on stage, Switch also supports a charity chosen by the dancers. Money is raised through ticket sales, merchandise, silent auctions, and more. In past editions, the proceeds have gone to charities such as COC Nederland, Doctors Without Borders, and War Child.
-
Creation for the NDT Summer Intensive
Every summer, NDT opens its doors to a group of pre-professional and professional dancers from around the world for the NDT Summer Intensive. The Summer Intensive gives these dancers the chance to enter the world of NDT and learn from the company from close by.
We also invite three emerging choreographers connected to NDT to create a piece for the participating dancers. This creates a strong exchange between new voices, dancers and makers. It supports the development of everyone involved.
-
Creation for Young Talent Project
Young Talent Project is a collaboration between the Royal Conservatoire Dance and NDT. Over several months, pre-professional dance students from the Royal Conservatoire are guided by former or current NDT dancers.
Young Talent Project supports talent in two ways. First, it gives young dance students the chance to get to know NDT’s way of working and its repertoire. It also helps them deepen their technique, talent and choreographic skills. Second, it gives former and current NDT dancers the chance to gain experience as teachers, rehearsal directors or choreographers. It is a project for shared growth and talent development, for the voices of tomorrow.

NDT 1 | Mainstage commissions
NDT is a house of creation. Creating new work is at the heart of what we do. We support makers at every stage of their career. A commission for NDT 1 is one of the larger opportunities we offer. These commissions focus on new work, strong partnerships and projects that bring different art forms together. They give established choreographers the chance to work with world-class dancers. They also help us develop our artistic practice as a company.
-
NDT 2 | Mainstage commissions
NDT 2 commissions are for the next generation of contemporary makers. This includes emerging and mid-career choreographers. These commissions give makers the chance to create new work with the talented dancers of NDT 2.
The work becomes part of our NDT 2 programme and tours in the Netherlands and abroad. As a house of creation, we focus not only on the final work, but also on the process. We want to offer makers an inspiring environment where they can develop their movement language, way of composing and working methods.
-
Special Projects
Special Projects are connected to our NDT commissions. They invite mid-career and established makers to step outside their usual way of working. These projects focus on experiment and new ideas. Special Projects can take place outside the traditional stage. They may use different spaces and settings, including the NDT Black Box.
These projects allow artists and audiences to meet in a different way from our mainstage performances. They also create space for new thinking and creative risk.

NDT's Associate Choreographers
Artistic positions
Associate Choreographers
Our Associate Choreographers are very important to NDT. They are a key part of our artistic identity. In the coming years, we will continue to develop our group of Associate Choreographers. Their work will connect closely to the commissions for NDT 1 and NDT 2.
For several years, we have worked with Associate Choreographers Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke and in 2025, Imre van Opstal & Marne van Opstal, Marcos Morau and Jermaine Spivey joined them as Associate Choreographers.

Amos Ben-Tal/OFFprojects - First Artist/Company in Residence with NDT
Artist or Company in Residence
Each season, we offer one Artist or Company in Residence opportunity. This is for a mid-career or established artist or company with a large body of work. We offer access to rehearsal space and share our resources. In this way, we support the next step in the maker’s development. As a house of creation, we want to be a shared home for the talent of tomorrow.
Introduce yourself as a maker
Do you have at least four years of professional experience as a choreographer? Are you interested in introducing yourself and your work to NDT? You can send us your details through our form. We look forward to learning more about your artistic vision and how it connects to NDT.
