Started with NDT in 2026

Gaya Hagemeier was born in Milan and holds Dutch nationality. She trained at the Dutch National Ballet Academy in Amsterdam and at the Arts Umbrella/VCC Post-Secondary Dance Diploma Programme in Vancouver, Canada. In the 2026–2027 season, Gaya joins NDT 2 as an apprentice.

How and why did you become a professional dancer?

“I always leave the theatre feeling changed by the indescribable moments created on stage, and I often find myself thinking about them long after the show has ended, whether I am watching or dancing in a performance. Training in dance from a young age and being surrounded by incredible art made me realize this is the world I want to be part of.“

How do you think art impacts your personal life, and the way you view the world?

“Art has impacted both my life and my view of the world in every way. It allows me to recognize and appreciate beauty in so many forms. Art has always been present in my life, and the more I became aware of that, the more I realized that art exists everywhere as an essential, universal language. I feel very lucky to be immersed in dance, and therefore surrounded by artists.”

What do you hope to bring to the audience as an artist?

“My hope is to inspire choreographers and audiences, and to share the incredible feeling of dancing on stage alongside my friends.”

“I see NDT as a place full of inspiration and opportunity, a collective of incredible people. Bringing together artists and audiences, who together continuously redefine the meaning of contemporary dance.”
