Hofstad Checkers Club

From the Checkers Club to the dance floor. This summer, we meet clubs across The Hague that, each in their own way, show what makes this city so special.

At Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), we believe that movement can be found everywhere. On stage, but also in sports halls, community centres, clubhouses and the places where people come together every week. That is why, this summer, we are visiting clubs across The Hague. We listen to their stories, learn about their traditions and celebrate the city we call home together.

"Oh Oh The Hague" is our club anthem"
Hofstad Checkers Club Jan Kok

For decades, Hofstad Checkers Club has been part of The Hague. The club even played a league match in the old Town Hall on Javastraat during the World Draughts Championship in 1994. The Hague’s green and yellow colours can still be found in the club’s logo, and Oh Oh The Hague is regularly heard as the club anthem.

Every club night is about more than just winning. Players greet one another with a handshake, take their seats at the board and settle into complete concentration. During a match, very little is said, but it is precisely in that silence that connections are formed.

At NDT, focus, discipline and attention to detail also play an important role. On stage, movement takes shape. At Hofstad Checkers Club, it happens between the moves, when players walk around the boards following other matches.

At first glance, checkers may seem like a quiet sport. But behind every board lies tension, strategy and a club where everyone is welcome.

Three Questions for Hofstad Checkers Club

If Hofstad Checkers Club were an NDT performance, what would it be called?
"That’s a difficult one. Checkers is not really a spectator sport, except for enthusiasts. But we do recognise the feeling of pride you experience when watching your child or grandchild during a match."

What would you like to teach NDT’s dancers?
"Concentration and focus. You need both throughout an entire checkers match."

Who is the most unpredictable player in the club?
"Actually, everyone. As soon as you underestimate someone, it can cost you the game. Of course, we have strong players, such as Hans den Engelsman, our 2026 club champion, and Jeroen Kos. But Wilfred Promes is also a remarkable member of the club. At 86, he still plays with great enjoyment. This year, he won the achievement award after playing no fewer than 44 matches in the club competition."
