We zijn enorm verheugd u te mogen verwelkomen in onze NDT Black Box voor de voorstelling van The Hole, waar onze NDT 1-dansers dit monumentale werk van choreograaf Ohad Naharin opnieuw presenteren. Het was nooit de bedoeling dat The Hole, oorspronkelijk gecreëerd voor Batsheva Dance Company in 2013, buiten Tel Aviv zou worden opgevoerd. We zijn er dan ook erg trots op dit werk voor een tweede keer naar ons publiek te brengen.
The Hole vereist een volledige transformatie van de ruimte, met in het midden een verhoogd podium, opgetrokken muren achter het publiek, en een metalen rooster dat aan het plafond wordt gehangen waarop dansers klimmen en waaraan ze hangen. Naharins spel met verschillende perspectieven grenst aan het filmische, waarbij alle dimensies van de ruimte worden benut. Volgens Naharin “nodigt The Hole je uit om onderdeel te zijn van een bijzondere ruimte met zijn eigen codes. Het werk gaat over zichzelf, over hoe alle elementen samenkomen om een collectief verhaal te creëren.” Wij nodigen je uit om je samen met ons onder te dompelen in deze unieke wereld.
Veel dank gaat uit aan Ohad, Ian en Rachael, maar ook aan onze medewerkers, dansers, het technische en productieteam voor hun fantastische werk in het transformeren van de NDT Black Box en het creëren van een nieuwe versie van het decor, en aan de rest van ons NDT-team voor hun passie in het realiseren van dit geïnspireerde programma.

“Dansen gaat over in het moment zijn. Het gaat over luisteren naar een scala aan percepties en over jezelf toestaan dat dit bewustzijn het beginpunt vormt van alle gevoelens, vormen en inhoud. Toch moeten we altijd onthouden waar we vandaan komen. Als ik aan 30 jaar geleden denk, komt Jiří Kylián in mijn gedachten op. Een man die mij veel heeft geleerd en diep heeft geraakt door zijn vrijgevigheid, talent, wijsheid en ervaring. NDT werd een tweede thuis voor mij en mijn werk. Ik vind het geweldig om hier te komen. De bijzonder hoge productiekwaliteit, de geweldig creatieve dansers én de fantastische gastvrijheid vormen een unieke combinatie die ik zelden ervaar.
Toen ik The Hole creëerde, vertelde ik mijn team dat ze zich moesten voorbereiden op een werk dat nooit zou toeren, nooit onze studio waar het tot stand kwam, zou verlaten. Daarvoor is het een te ingewikkelde productie, dacht ik. NDT heeft het tegendeel bewezen; het schijnbaar onmogelijke is mogelijk gemaakt. Door samen met de NDT-dansers aan The Hole te werken, kreeg ik de unieke kans om het stuk opnieuw te bekijken: het waardevolle proces van de samenwerking met deze getalenteerde, creatieve en vrijgevige dansers deed het werk opnieuw groeien.
Op de vraag waar The Hole over gaat, is mijn eerste antwoord altijd dat het over het werk zelf gaat. Over hoe alle elementen samenkomen en een verhaal creëren. Een dansverhaal over volume, kwetsbaarheid, het gebruik van explosieve kracht, onderzoek naar beweging en over organisatie en structuur. Het gaat over dynamiek, om jezelf kunnen lachen, overdrijven en onderschatten, en over de verbinding tussen plezier en inspanning. Bovenal vertelt het een verhaal over het uitstijgen boven de waanzin en over passie en fantasie. The Hole is een op zichzelf staande ruimte met geheel eigen regels en u wordt daar in uitgenodigd.”

“Something I love about The Hole is how much space we have as performers to make our own decisions. There are so many moments of spontaneous improvisation where we fill in the time with our own physical narratives. I appreciate these moments because I’m not alone when they occur; my eyes are receiving information from those around me and I can respond to what I see in real-time. Both Ian and Rachel encourage us in their Gaga classes to observe the other people in the space and to allow ourselves to be influenced by what we see. To take what we see and mimic it, counter it, move around it, the options are endless. We feel those around us while tuning into our inner layers of sensation and imagination. This multitasking requires a calm state of mind which at times can feel like a hefty contrast to the chaos that exists in the piece. This practice of seeing and listening while being available to tap into a colorful range of physical possibilities is at the core of The Hole.”
“It’s been five years since we last performed this work. This time, I had the precious opportunity to keep doing research for the work. Even though it was five years ago, I still feel fresh and inspired by the whole rehearsal process.
It is extraordinary to perform The Hole: such an intimate space, a fantastic experience for us to be so connected to the area, the audience, and the piece. When performing The Hole by Ohad Naharin, I sense the multiple layers of my emotions, complex emotions, but very honest and generous. With all these feelings within this space, I hope the audience will also experience such a journey with us.”

The Hole is a game and the task is to always listen to the ebb and flow of the players, it demands for a heightened awareness but also a generous surrendering! In its intensity it also brings huge amounts of pleasure and that is why this piece holds so much magic. Getting to exist in this world feels like the juiciest secret!”
