Highlights of 2020

A particularly eventful year

We would like to look back with you on a particularly eventful year.

For NDT, 2020 was all about new beginnings. Due to the corona crisis, the company was forced to look for new ways to continue to perform its beloved art form: performances in the theater for up to 30 visitors and digital live streams offered a successful alternative! Many thousands of viewers from more than 65 countries have been watching our live streams since September. Furthermore, 2020 marked the start of a new artistic artistic leadership and a new direction for the organization. This was not the season we planned for, but we have decided to embrace it as the season that will define us in unique ways.

On this page we highlight these and other special events from the year 2020.

Interview with artistic director Emily Molnar

Since August 2020, Emily Molnar is the new artistic director of NDT. Her commencement of the position kicked off during one of the most challenging periods for the company and the dance world to date, with an invisible virus having far-reaching consequences.

Meet Emily Molnar in this conversation, in which she tells more about where she comes from, but most importantly about where she wants to go with NDT.

... and at home!

Since the first measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, the company has been active in bringing its dance art to the public, with digital recordings of complete ballets on NDTV, online films including She Remembers and Standby by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot as their goodbye present to the audience of NDT, improvisation and repertoire workshops, live streams of the dancers, etcetera.

During the first wave, we developed the Stay home and keep on dancing page to bring all these items together, including the video#QUARANTINECREATION, perhaps the most succesfull highlight of the year.

Performances at home with the NDT live streams

The live streams have proved to be an excellent alternative in this unprecedented time. With intimate and precise camera work, the company aspires to provide its audience with a digital experience that brings NDT creations closer to the viewer. No pre-recorded images, but live from the theater, as if the viewer were present at the same time. The livestreams of Endlessly Free, Dare to Say and I wonder where the dreams I don’t remember go were watched by more than 15,000 viewers from more than 65 different countries!

Prize winners

Our dancers have won prizes the past year: Boston Gallacher won the Piket KunstPrijs for dance, Lydia Bustinduy will receive the 2020 Prize of Merit from the Dansersfonds ’79 Foundation and Chloé Albaret has been nominated for a prestigious Swan.

Read the various news items about all three awards below. Congratulations on your achievements, Boston, Lydia and Chloé!

Talent development

Unfortunately, not all talent development projects that NDT organizes could take place this year. We are very pleased that, in collaboration with the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, we were able to organize the annual Young Talent Project for the students of the Dance Department.

The annual dance performance Here we live and now, in collaboration with Korzo, has also taken place. In this performance, upcoming choreographers are invited to create a short performance and present it on the Korzo stage. This year the creators were our NDT 1 dancer Lea Ved, former NDT dancer Spencer Dickhaus, and Zahira Suliman.

Education

The Talent Development & Education department is dedicated to organizing events and activities that focus on the experience of dance in every possible way. Also during this strange year, the department has brought all NDtTfans great things.

Teacher Lenna Schouten tells more about the project Uitblinkers!, a project in which participants, young dance talents between 7 and 12 years old, get the opportunity to discover and develop their own unique talent.

At the beginning of 2020, NDT launched the second successful dance app Dreamplay for primary school students in grades 5 and 6. The application, just like the first dance app Parade for pupils from grades 3 and 4, has been developed especially for use on the digibord (digital blackboard) in the classroom.

Dance along at home

This year we presented our first online workshop videos. Get up and dance along with the NDT dancers in your own home!

Be inspired by various online workshop videos: learn fragments from NDT repertoire or participate in an improvisation workshop.

Special initiative as the start of the season 2020-2021

At the start of the season 2020-2021, NDT initiated a brand new project called the Shared Platform. We invited 18 international artists in dance and theater from across the Netherlands to work with the dancers of NDT 1 and NDT 2. The initiative aimed to create an opportunity for research and development for our dancers with a focus on diverse voices, ideas and approaches.

The Shared Platform was a month long training platform intended to help us develop tools for future projects.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

The engagement and support of our audience is heartwarming. In this unprecedented year, NDT has welcomed many new friends and Fonds NDT participants. This year the company also received a wonderful legacy from Mrs. Edmée Muysken, after her friendship of more than twenty years, she has included NDT in her will to stimulate talent development and innovation for a new generation. Her legacy benefits Open Space. A new project, which NDT is developing for research and free creative development of the dancers and other artists involved. The first edition of Open Space will take place in 2021.

BE PART OF THE EXPERIENCE

The company is extremely grateful to everyone for any help, large or small. This allows us to look to the future with confidence and ensures that NDT remains a voice for the art of dance, the public and the international dance community, now and in the future. If you are also considering supporting NDT, you can choose for several options: Friendship, Participation in the NDT Fund or bequeath the company. Whichever form you choose, you will make us very happy with your commitment to NDT.
