Sometimes, I wonder

NDT 1
Vanishing Twin Jiří Kylián
Claude Pascal Jiří Kylián
Bella Figura Jiří Kylián

Celebrating sixty years of NDT without a bow of respect to Kylián would simply be no celebration at all. Sometimes, I wonder is a full evening solely dedicated to one of the most profound, shape shifting figures in NDT’s history who’s creative visions have moved the company to unparalleled heights.

Bella Figura (1995), one of the true classics on NDT’s repertoire, is considered a Kylián masterpiece. In Claude Pascal (2002) four dancers express a family history by means of grotesque gestures and surrealist text, against the backdrop of gigantic mirrored doors. Vanishing Twin (2008) symbolizes temporariness, suppressed emotions and the dark side we all share, but would rather not reveal.

VANISHING TWIN – JIRI KYLIAN

With Vanishing Twin (2008), Kylián was inspired by the medical phenomenon of the same name, whereby during the pregnancy of twins, one foetus displaces the other until the latter disappears completely. The ballet symbolizes temporariness, suppressed emotions and the dark side we all share, but would rather not reveal. Vanishing Twin was nominated for the Swan, ‘Most Impressive Dance Production of 2008’.

Only a grandmaster like Kylián can make something as unimaginable as (in)finity so tangible. And only a dance ensemble such as NDT knows how to bring this so close to the audience.

CLAUDE PASCAL – JIRI KYLIAN

Less is more and more is less. In Claude Pascal (2002) four dancers express a family history by means of grotesque gestures and surrealist texts. Against the backdrop of gigantic mirrored doors they advance their philosophical theses. This play features three timeless, wonderful duets, in which the energetic movements subtly slow down until almost still.

This more recent work by Jiří Kylián is bursting with supernatural artistry.

BELLA FIGURA – JIRI KYLIAN

Bella Figura (1995) is considered a Kylián masterpiece. It was one of the first times he deconstructed the stage where theatrical elements acted as a metaphor.

Not so often the spectator of a new ballet has just one wish: to see it again.

CHLOÉ ALBARET On BELLA FIGURA:

“It has been a wonderful experience and opportunity to work on Bella Figura. The piece was taught to us by some artists of the original cast which made the process special, profound and detailed. When Jiří came to the studio, he gave another layer to the choreography, different images and a meaning to what we are doing while also giving us the freedom to explore our own personal relationship to the piece. I appreciate his human approach to the work a lot and felt very much inspired by the thoughts he shared with me/us. Bella Figura is one of a kind and I am truly grateful to be a part of such a masterpiece.”

ROGER VAN DER POEL On VANISHING TWIN:

“Despite having performed Vanishing Twin in the past, and in different roles, today the piece still feels new and the space for new discoveries is still endless. The speedy, risky nature of the choreography is so thrilling! I feel constantly on the edge… my senses are hyper alert… A true test to fast reflexes and precision. I feel fortunate to partner and share the danger (and some bruises and scratches) with the powerful, last original cast member Lydia Bustinduy; to be coached by the amazing and (very) funny Lukáš Timulak alongside Tamako Akiyama; and to re-work this piece with the always inspiring Jiří Kylián. So looking forward to sharing the stage with all my colleagues in this incredible program!”

MENG-KE WU On CLAUDE PASCAL:

“To be able to work with Jiří Kylián and his group of great artists again after six years was a wonderful and privileged experience. In the piece Claude Pascal, the challenge for me was the duality of choreographic precision and artistic freedom. I appreciated the images and fantasies Jiří shared with me throughout the process so much. I felt very inspired by his human approach and by the truth of his words. He truly is a master.”
