About the programme

“With his captivating and original way of hewing out movement from the human body, Landerer remains a name to watch out for”, wrote Dance Europe on Felix Landerer in 2012. Ten years later, Landerer continues to be praised for his virtuosic and organic movement vocabulary. With a tone that reflects on the human condition, Landerer crafts poetic compositions that are rooted in resistance and resilience and are shaped by clarity and intention. About his creative process, the choreographer says: “It starts with a sense of creative freedom (…) and gets more cerebral once the brain starts searching for dramaturgical clarity and setting everything within a framework. What is beautiful is to observe how informed the material already is, simply because you made it under the influence of a given idea or subject.”
Landerer has created works for several international dance companies. His company LANDERER&COMPANY received the Stadtkulturpreis Hannover for outstanding civic engagement in arts and culture in 2017. In season 2018-2019, the choreographer created The whys and wherefores are elusive for NDT 2. This new work will mark Landerer’s debut creation for NDT 1.

For the past decade, Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar have formed an essential voice to NDT’s repertoire. Through work marked by a forceful sensuality and vulnerability, the duo has been fascinating audiences with a world of their own making, one that defies preconceived notions of movement and the expression of the body. “To me, dance is tribal and primitive, it’s about joy”, says Eyal. “When I have an idea, it feels like it has always been there, and yet as if it has never been there. Each work is a continuation of the previous one and offers a unique opportunity to go deeper and deeper.”
Eyal & Behar have been running their company L-E-V since 2013, and created several world premieres for NDT, such as Salt Womb (2016) that was awarded a Zwaan for ‘Best Dance Production’ in 2016. After seven years, NDT is excited to again collaborate with Eyal & Behar and bring back their fresh perspective on dance to our audience.

Choreographers

During his dance career at the Opera of Hannover, Felix Landerer (Germany) began choreographing. In 2006 Landerer transitioned to working full time as a freelance choreographer and founded his own company LANDERER&COMPANY. He was appointed the house choreographer at Scapino Ballet Rotterdam in 2011. Landerer created for the first time for the company in season 2018-2019, when he made The whys and wherefores are elusive for the NDT 2 dancers.

Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar (Israel) form an innovative duo in the contemporary danceworld. For NDT 2 they created Sara (2013) and FEELINGS  (2016) and for NDT 1 they created Bedroom Folk (2015) and Salt Womb (2016). In 2013 the duo formed their dance company L-E-V.

In 2019 Felix Landerer created The whys and wherefores are elusive for NDT 2, the first work he made for the company.

It is a pleasure to follow these amazingly flexible bends, torsions and stretches in inventive sequences or in surprising poses, just off-balance.

about The whys and wherefores are elusive
Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar

This choreographer duo has already created several works for both NDT 1 and NDT 2. Most recently NDT 1 danced their Bedroom Folk in season 2021-2022.

The tightly executed Bedroom Folk (2015) by Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar was an excellent opening. On a pumping rhythm, the synchronicity of the clumping group dissolves, only to finally bind together again. Good for the first standing ovation in the new House.

Introduction talks

NDT organizes introduction talks prior to the performances of NDT 1 and NDT 2 in the Netherlands. The introduction talk takes 30 minutes and offers the opportunity the audience to meet our company on a personal level before the performance starts. Modern dance and the repertoire of NDT in particular are the focus of our introduction talks.

You can read more information in the information e-mail you receive the day before your visit to Amare, or via the website of the theater in question where you are visiting the NDT performance.
