Online programme book NDT Summer Intensive
Welcome to the Open Night of NDT Summer Intensive 2024!

Welcome to the Open Night of NDT Summer Intensive 2024!
During this evening, the participants, choreographers and teachers of this year’s NDT Summer Intensive show you what they have been working on and what they have experienced in the studios of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT).
The last two weeks, these studios were the home base for sixty students that took part in an intensive training program comprised of NDT repertoire, working on a new creation, and classes focused on dance technique such as improvisation.
In this online programme book you will find more information about the 3 new creations made by choreographers Anne Jung, Luca-Andrea Lino Tessarini and Jermaine Spivey, all in collaboration with the dancers.
We hope you enjoy tonight’s presentation!

“Interlude
is a dynamic exploration where movement becomes a language, expressing the intricate relationships between dancers, their physical abilities, their environments, and the flow of time.
It presents a vital passage in dancers’ education through NDTSI, allowing them to step away from their usual routines, explore new approaches, and step out of their comfort zones.”

“NDT Summer Intensive was truly a transformative experience for me as an artist and as an individual. Every day we entered a space open to new ideas where the goal is to learn and get inspired from everyone and everything around us. Sharing the space with beautiful artists from all over the world was so special. There was a strong and valued sense of community and trust within the studios which allowed us to push boundaries of movement. I’m so excited and eager to further explore everything this place taught me for the future. These two weeks definitely pushed me mentally and physically and I couldn’t be more grateful to have been able to dance in this environment. Thank you to everyone who made it so wonderful.”

“Creating for the NDT Summer Intensive has been a long-standing ambition of mine, an objective that has fuelled my passion for creation for years. the fact that i’m deep in designing a new body of work along with an incredible group of 19 young artists right now, is still beyond me.
My journey with NDT began – hold onto something steady – a decade ago when i, too participated in the NDT Summer Intensive. It was an experience that profoundly re-shaped my artistic vision and goals for my future as a dancer and creator. Having participated as a teacher before and returning now, with the opportunity to choreograph and contribute on the side of a creator, feels like a full-circle moment that i hold dearly to my little dancing heart.
Two weeks pass rapidly, especially when filled with so much readiness to play and curiosity oozing out of every inch within the studios. I have learned an overwhelming amount, all thanks to the trust my group has granted me throughout every moment in this creation. We’ve thrown ourselves – quite literally – into unknown territories and they not once ceased to amaze me with their passion and desire to help me figure out what i couldn’t figure out myself – what bigger gift than connections being formed while creating is there, i ask myself.
The essence of this new creation is precisely that, them.”

“NDT Summer Intensive has been nothing short of life changing. This intensive has instilled in me a deeper appreciation for diversity, a stronger sense of self, and an unwavering commitment to pursue my artistic dreams with authenticity and passion.”

“We’ve talked together about diversity and what is required to participate in diverse spaces. One of the key points that has come up is the necessity to develop skills for staying engaged when we don’t fully understand something or someone. I am challenging these young dancers to approach choreography as if it is improvisation and improvisation as if it is choreography. This means their dancing in this work keeps them in a state of response, a state of rigorous doing, a state of essential curiosity and association. There is a lot to be said for the word ‘association’ and all the different ways we can experience and demonstrate connection in the absence of full understanding.”

“NDT Summer Intensive has been an eye-opening experience full of joy and challenges. Everyday for two weeks I felt welcomed into a safe and open space that encouraged me to share my vulnerability and curiosity. Thanks to the incredible faculty who generously shared their knowledge, I have a whole new box of tools that helped access a new and different dancer in me. I’ve come to an understanding of the impact my inner dialogue has to the way I dance with how vital the connection between my mind and body is, which will be very exciting to keep exploring as an artist. I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this experience and to have met such beautiful, inspiring and unique dancers.”
