Figures in Extinction [1.0] wins ‘Zwaan for most impressive dance production’ 2022

30 September 2022

We are proud!

NDT’s associate choreographer Crystal Pite has won a Zwaan for most impressive dance production for her most recent NDT work, Figures in Extinction [1.0], made in collaboration with Simon McBurney. The Zwanen (Swans) were awarded during the Dutch Dance Days Gala on Friday 30 September at Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht.

Most impressive dance production

“The urgent performance Figures in Extinction [1.0] created by choreographer Crystal Pite in collaboration with Simon McBurney is a wonderful and wry spectacle about the future of a planet in crisis,” says the Dutch Association of Theatres and Concert Halls (VSCD). “Where the spectator can still initially lose himself in the beauty and diversity of species in nature, the theatrical experience accelerates towards an inescapable doomsday scenario.”

Figures in Extinction [1.0] premiered in The Hague on May 6, 2022, marking the first collaboration between Crystal Pite and the artistic director of Complicité, Simon McBurney, in a series of creations.

In addition to Figures in Extinction [1.0], Waterbrothers by Roy Overdijk (program State Shift | The Ruggeds), and Interval by Amos Ben-Tal and Gosse de Kort (OFFprojects) were also nominated in the category for ‘Zwaan for most impressive dance production’.

The Zwanen 2022

The Zwanen are the dance awards of the VSCD and have been associated with Nederlandse Dansdagen since 2003. Besides the presentation of the Jonge Zwanen and the Zwanen for the most impressive dance production and performance, the anniversary edition of the Nederlandse Dansdagen will have an extra festive touch. Once again, a Gouden Zwaan was given to a dancer or choreographer whose career has made a major contribution to Dutch dance. This year, the Gouden Zwaan (Golden Swan) was awarded to Lloyd Marengo.
