NDT 1
Sol León & Paul Lightfoot School of Thought

The performances in this programme have taken place in season 2015-2016.

This programme brings back a renewed version of the full-length ballet School of Thought by NDT’s house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. The piece aims to literally close the gap between the dancers and their audience. School of Thought invites its audience on stage to offer an intimate perspective on the multi-layered ballet by these two choreographers, the dancers and their extraordinary talent. With this piece, León and Lightfoot aim to emphasize their creative vision in a work that effortlessly merges the past, present and future of NDT’s artistic core.

SCHOOL OF THOUGHT – SOL LEON & PAUL LIGHTFOOT

“With School of Thought wepresent a very intimate perspective on our art. Intimate, because the audience is seated around the stage. The chairs you sit on were first used during the 1958 World Expo in Brussels, which centered around the belief in freedom and progress. Being this close to the oval, wooden dance floor drastically changes the way the work is experienced. You are taken through the spiritual and emotional development of the ballet and witness the creative chemistry between us, the choreographers, and the dancers who give it shape. As choreographers and collaborators we are inspired to explore the relativity of the artist’s presence within the reality of life. School of Thought for us, is a layered and varied work, a school or freethought, where past and present seamlessly come together.

We hope you enjoy this creative voyage into our world where dance and its importance are investigated.”

– Sol León & Paul Lightfoot

ABOUT LEON & LIGHTFOOT

J
In their 26 years as a choreographic duo Sol León (Córdoba, Spanje) and Paul Lightfoot (Kingsley, Engeland) have built a rich repertoire of over fifty ballets which show a wide range of compelling pieces that, however diverse, share a strong, innovative artistic voice. They have mastered a powerful, yet tender and sometimes humorous dance aesthetic that is consistently rooted in emotion and often leans on theatrical aspects. As house choreographers of NDT since 2002, the artistic voyage of both choreographers and their partnership, is a celebration of their unpredictable and idiosyncratic style, and their inexhaustible work ethic. León and Lightfoot have shown no fear in bearing their fragility, their euphoria or their personal struggles through their work. By doing so they have given colour to the company as one that is not afraid to take artistic risks and that pushes the boundaries of creativity, highlighting NDT as one of the best modern dance companies on national and international level.
