SOIR HISTORIQUE

NDT 1
November 29 – December 21, 2019
The Hague, Amsterdam, Tilburg, Nijmegen, Heerlen

About the performance
Soir Historique revolves around the room as the event, and how this theme has found a way through NDT’s expansive sixty year oeuvre. Hans van Manen, NDT’s first grand maître of choreography, created Situation especially for the company in 1970. The piece is set in an empty room with nothing but walls, a door and a clock. Situation will be joined by Gabriela Carrizo’s The missing door (2013).
Performed in a surrealistic room on stage, the piece is true dance theatre, in which suspense, absurdity, humor and timing coincide sublimely. Inspired by these settings, these situations, the evening will be completed with a world premiere by Edward Clug, known for his subtle yet eloquently defined movement language. For NDT, Clug’s creative voice symbolizes a new generation of choreographic forces in the company.

Reviews

"Van Manen has greatly increased every human movement in this ballet, and with that he has certainly enriched the dance language."

- De Tijd (1970) on Situation

"Unbelievably clever timing (...) Carrizo gives reality a nice touch."

- de Volkskrant on The missing door

"It's ingenious how Clug can make small, tight convulsions in the body seem completely naturally, even more as they transform into greatest movements unnoticed."

- Leids Dagblad on Proof

Situation - Hans van Manen
Fifty years ago in 1970, Hans van Manen, NDT’s first grand maître of choreography, created Situation especially for the company. The piece is set in an empty room with nothing but walls, a door and a clock. There is no music, and dancers are solely guided by space and the noises that surround them.

The missing door - Gabriela Carrizo
Gabriela Carrizo created The missing door for the company in 2013. Performed in a surrealistic room on stage, the piece is true dance theatre, in which suspense, absurdity, humor and timing coincide sublimely.
