Closing the season 2019-2020

26 June 2020

Two exclusive film premieres by Sol León & Paul Lightfoot

When: from mid-July
Where: the NDT YouTube channel and NDTV

Due to measures around COVID-19 the remaining performances of the European Kunstkamer tour that were scheduled in Paris, Madrid, London and Baden-Baden in the remaining months of this season were also forced to be officially cancelled.

In light of this being NDT’s 60th anniversary season, the company still wishes to maintain a festive closure. We also wanted to show our appreciation for your continuous support, therefore NDT currently is creating two world premieres which will be captured exclusively on film. The films can be viewed free of charge from approximately mid-July via the YouTube channel of NDT and ndt.nl. Exact dates and times will be announced later.

These films will be created by NDT’s house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, along with the artists of NDT 1 and NDT 2, for whom this season simultaneously marks a farewell to NDT after their passionate commitment to the company for over 30 years. Both projects choreographed using the stipulations and protocol of social-distancing as its metiér.

about the films

The first is symbolically named Standby, the word used to cue artists preparing onstage that a performance is about to commence. It is dedicated to the entire company: combining the 42 artists who were together on the NDT stage in this tumultuous 2019-2020 season. Standby, a large physical work inspired and dictated by the rules of social distancing, uses the music of the Danish composer Knudgåre Riisager, who wrote this iconic music reflecting on all the stages of a classical ballet class, which NDT gives its own whimsical take on how we use classical technique inside our unique house style.

The second film is a far more intimate and poetic world named She remembers. The cast is made up of six exceptional artists who shall be ending their careers at NDT, and departing from the company at the end of this season. A work inspired by an ocean of memories and the beauty of transformation using music from George Frideric Handel and Max Richter.

Paul Lightfoot: “NDT aspires that these creations will send out a message to the globe that artists are still very much alive and kicking, finding new ways to create, dance and transmit positive energy despite these upside down times, as well as marking the end of our 60th birthday.”

We look forward to presenting these creations and to conclude our 60th anniversary together with you.
