Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) is one of the leading contemporary dance companies in the world employing 50 dancers and another 70 or so staff working behind the scenes to perfect performances and the dance experience in all its facets from medical care to lighting and sound design and educational activities.

The Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Art together form the University of the Arts The Hague. The Royal Conservatoire’s Dance programme offers talented pupils the opportunity to combine in a single school a regular education and dance training starting at primary school up until bachelor level. The Dance programme cultivates close ties with the Nederlands Dans Theater to foster the professional development of its students.

We have a vacancy as of 1 September 2020 for a:

Ballet pianist

to replace our colleague who works for both the Conservatoire and the NDT and who is retiring shortly.

Job description

A ballet pianist provides musical accompaniment for a variety of classes, auditions, studio evenings, exams and performances. He/she works closely with the dance teacher, agreeing on musical interpretation, tempo, volume etc. The ballet pianist arranges and adapts existing repertoire and compiles music for classes, exams and performances and is also responsible at the Conservatoire for managing the studio spaces, the sets of instruments and the sheet music. Candidates are required to sight read variations from the classical and neoclassical ballet repertoire.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has experience of the aforementioned tasks, is good at improvising and has a listening ear for colleagues, teachers and students. The pianist preferably has experience with working in a professional programme and has sound command of Dutch and English.

At NDT the pianist will accompany the morning ballets classes of the NDT dancers. The pianist will also take part in various NDT tours abroad which requires flexibility in terms of availability. At the Conservatoire the pianist will provide piano accompaniment for classes and/or rehearsals which will mainly take place in the afternoons and on occasions on Sundays and during studio and performance afternoons and evenings.

We are offering

A separate contract of employment will be concluded with each organisation in the first instance for a year. The contract with the NDT is for 10 hours per week, the post is graded on salary scale 6 and the Collective Agreement for the Theatre and Dance sector applies. At the Conservatoire hours will be agreed in consultation up to a maximum of 20 per week, the position is graded on salary scale 9 and the Collective Agreement for the Universities of Applied Sciences (CAO-HBO) applies.

In the summer of 2021 both organisations will be moving to AMARE, the house of culture for the whole of The Hague, and the new home of the Zuiderstrandtheater, Residentie Orkest, Royal Conservatoire and NDT. All the work involved will take place in AMARE.
