40 years of NDT 2

NDT 2, the second company of Nederlands Dans Theater, was founded in April 1978, which means that this year NDT 2 celebrates its 40th anniversary. The performances of the new NDT 2 programme Sum Thoughts coincide with this anniversary and offer the unique opportunity to reflect on this special company and its groundbreaking development.

NDT 2 was born in 1978, under the artistic leadership of Jiří Kylián and reconfirmed the company as a pioneer in the world of dance. Originally conceived as an artistic tool to enable younger artists to prepare for the artistic requirements of NDT 1, it began modestly under the name of “Springplank”.
The concept developed into a young company with a completely unique repertoire. In the early 1980s the name changed to "Junioren", to finally be renamed NDT 2 in 1987.

Development of NDT 2
The construction of NDT 2 has always been focused on the development of the dancer´s artistic personality and did so through a varied repertoire consisting mainly of pieces that were originally created for NDT 1. This enabled the dancer to acquire a diverse vocabulary in a short period of time. Centralizing on the dancer's development on a technical, expressive and artistic level has remained unchanged, yet the focus on the works has shifted considerably. Over the years, NDT 2 has evolved into a full-fledged, independent company for which emerging and established choreographers create ballets, including Hans van Manen, Marco Goecke, Alexander Ekman, Sol León & Paul Lightfoot, Johan Inger, and Edward Clug. Under the executive artistic direction of Nancy Euverink, who once also started as a dancer with NDT 2, the company consistently builds a unique identity. Another important element within the company is its extensive tour schedule in the Netherlands and abroad. In season 2018-2019 NDT 2 will be performing in France, Argentina and Mexico.
