This weekend: World premiere Spiritwalking
Nederlands Dans Theater returns to Holland Festival with the side-specific performance of Spiritwalking. The full-length choreography by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot premieres on June 7th at Food Center Amsterdam. The entire NDT 1 ensemble will be accompanied live by the innovative Kronos Quartet from San Francisco, that presents new and existing by Philip Glass. The (sold out) performance is exclusively presented from 7 to 9 June in Amsterdam.
The Food Center Amsterdam is the wholesale market for the Amsterdam region. This market area at the Jan van Galenstraat 4 was opened in 1934. Spiritwalking is created specifically for the central market hall, which has an area of 700m2. The space has never before been used as a theater venue so for this production a stage and grandstand had to be built. Once before León & Lightfoot created site-specific show; Sooner or Later was presented in the Westergasfabriek during the Holland Festival 2007.
The 75 minutes long choreography is created in the for León & Lightfoot characteristic emotional dance language. This is the tenth choreography the duo creates on music by Philip Glass. The world premiere is inspired by the theme of memories and has therefore inherited the title Spiritwalking. The last full-length choreography by León & Lightfoot was Programme V in 12/13, entitled School of Thought.
Kronos Quartet is: David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Sunny Yang (cello) en Hank Dutt (viola). The musicians present:
-Traditional (Sweden, arranged by Kronos Quartet, transcribed by Ljova): Tusen Tankar
Philip Glass for Spiritwalking:
-Section I (transcribed by Alex Weston): Violin Concerto no. 1, Movements II & III
-Section II (transcribed by Alex Weston): “The Grid” uit Koyaanisqatsi
